An Eve of Light Story

About

Her voice defined a band a generation worshipped. Now she sings for men who buy people.

Lourdes sways on a transparent platform above a black-market cocktail party, wings stapled into her shoulders.

The gig was sold as performance art: nine drugged singers on tarot-shaped stages, paid to be alluring for men who deal in things she is careful not to understand. The wings aren't costume — they were surgically attached on Friday. The men call the women flitzels. Lourdes calls it paying the rent.

There was a time she was "Soleil": one of the two voices that defined Psi-Kyll Soul, the indie collective whose songs became scripture for a certain kind of broken listener. The band imploded; the legend calcified; the woman came down to earth with a son. Hector is school-age, bright, and locked inside a shell no doctor can name, telling strange stories about birds from the back seat of her dying car. To keep him fed, insured, and safe in a society that treats disabled children as burdens, Lourdes waits tables, chases auditions, and takes the gigs that come with anesthesia. She has a private name for the real work: ArtWorking. And the instrument everything depends on — her body, her voice — is wearing out faster than she can sell it.

Meanwhile, a violet-eyed stranger has begun appearing wherever Lourdes is most humiliated — a woman who mends torn flesh with a song only Lourdes can hear, drops grown men without raising her voice, speaks the stage name Lourdes buried, and offers her one chance to become what she was always meant to be.

Lourdes knows a purchase when it's dressed as a rescue. She also knows what happens to Hector the day her body finally quits.

ArtWork is a standalone descent into the Eve of Light universe's art economy — a world one contract beneath ours, where songs restitch flesh, angels are manufactured to order, and a mother's love is the rawest material on the market. The deeper the offer pulls, the stranger the light gets.

For readers who want body horror under stage lights, Faustian recruitment, and beauty priced in flesh.
